Writing with a Voice
Writing your website with a voice is about your personality. It's how
you want the world to percieve you. You want your voice to stand out from
your competitors – a unique identity which only comes from you.
Your voice needs to sound like it comes from the same place all the time.
If that voice characteristic suddenly changes, readers will notice it. They will
immediately think, 'that doesn't sound like them'.
It's not difficult to find your voice. When developing it, your company does not
have to pretend to be something they are not. They would come across as false
and pretentuous. All you need to do is be yourself. That will come through in the
content and to your customers. What you are saying on your website should be as
natural as if you are talking to a customer in person.
Your brand voice needs to reflect your companies values and should be
appropriate for your industry. It wouldn't make sense for a bank to sound goofy,
or a children's playschool to sound too serious.
Writing in the royal 'we' on your About page is not appropriate if
you are not part of a team. Write in the first person and be proud of the fact.
Before publishing, get in the habit of asking yourself. Does this sound like me?
Your company is a reflection of you and your employees. Your brand reflects
your companies values. What you value in your company needs to come out in
your voice.
